High pressure solenoid valves are typically found in high pressure processing systems, petrochemical systems, cracking plants, refineries, high pressure natural gas installations, high pressure gas storage systems, offshore oil and gas rig applications for the on/ off (open or closed) and diverting control of high pressure liquid and gas media automation systems.
High pressure and special application solenoid valves need to be chosen with great care, taking consideration for system minimum and maximum pressure,temperature,media compatibility, flow requirements and flow direction, number of connecting ports and port size and port type ie. thread or flange type along with voltage requirements, voltage tolerance and if ATEX protection is required for potentially hazardous environments. High Pressure Solenoid valves are available with metal to metal seat, PTFE to Metal seat with optional NBR, FKM and EPDM static sealing to suit most media applications. There are also options for open and closed position switches or sensors so process systems can monitor the solenoid valve position in real time, twin coil combinations to guarantee valve function should one coil fail, slow opening or closing to avoid system pressure shock waves, manual over ride functions for manual intervention and extended core tube options to isolate the solenoid coil from high temperature or cryogenic media temperatures.
Miniature high pressure solenoid valves typically have a very small orifice resulting in reduced flow but do have the advantages of being compact, lightweight and lower cost, typical port sizes from 1/8",1/4" and 3/8" BSP or NPT thread. These miniature high pressure solenoid valves will typically operate from vacuum or Zero pressure to upwards of 500 bar however typically be mounted in any direction, but ideally coil between vertical to horizontal.
High pressure servo or pressure assisted solenoid valves typically a floating piston or diaphragm design offering higher flow than direct acting compact solenoid valves as they have typically much larger orifice or flow path but will be much larger, heavier and more expensive than smaller direct acting compact versions.
Typical port sizes for high pressure solenoid valves range from 3/8",1/2",3/4",1",11/4",11/2" and 2" BSP or NPT thread of flange DN15, DN20, DN25, DN32, DN40 or DN50 and beyond. These high pressure assisted servo solenoid valves require a minimum differential pressure to operate usually a minimum between 0.5 to 10 bar, (i.e. the inlet pressure must be at least 0.5 to 10 bar higher than the outlet pressure) as the pressure difference is utilised via an internal pilot control circuit to control the movement of the main sealing piston or diaphragm against the main valve sealing face / orifice. These pilot / servo assisted high pressure solenoid valves typically must be mounted with the coil +/- 15 degrees of vertical.
Kick pilot or forced piston high-pressure solenoid valves combine the attributes of direct acting functionality along with pressure assistance. The piston is attached to the armature by a mechanical link so the solenoid valve will open regardless of system pressure differentials. However when there is pressure differential, this is used to help the opening and closing of a high-pressure solenoid valve, via the piston pilot circuit. A lack of pressure difference the armature will "kick" or "force" the piston into the required open or closed position. Again typically kick pilot high pressure solenoid valves must be mounted with the coil +/1 15 degrees to vertical.
The only exception to the rule are the high pressure coaxial range of solenoid valves, which offer direct acting function and high flow rates compared to solenoid valves and are more compact by design size for size and can control flow of media in both directions. The coaxial solenoid and coax pneumatically operated valves are an ideal solution for high-pressure systems and unlike other solenoid valves coax valves are suitable for contaminated or viscous thick media up to 600 centistokes and can be mounted vertically, horizontally or in any position. Additional advantages include manifold options, ATEX, open and closed position switches and custom made options easy manufactured to meet customer requirements.
